A Taste of Christmas in Germany

This recipe is extra special to me because it’s one of the first authentic German dishes I learned after moving to Germany for several years in my twenties. My downstairs neighbor—a warm, witty grandmother we all called “Oma”—became my unofficial cooking mentor. Every other Saturday, I would make my way to her small kitchen, where she taught me traditional German dishes, shared stories, and helped me learn the language.

Among all the recipes we cooked together, Glühwein (pronounced “gloo-vine”) quickly became my winter favorite.

If you’ve ever visited Germany during Christmastime, you already know: Glühwein is everywhere. Every Christmas market (Weihnachtsmarkt) has steaming mugs of this hot spiced wine, and people sip it as they stroll through the glowing stalls, wrapped in scarves and bundled against the cold. One sip, and you’re instantly transported back to those magical winter evenings.

This recipe is my way of bringing that tradition home—simple, comforting, nostalgic, and perfect for celebrating the season.

Why You'll Love This Hot Spiced Wine

Aside from its dreamy aroma and irresistible flavor, this recipe checks all the boxes for an effortless winter drink:

Easy to make – It comes together in minutes.
Great for gatherings – Warm, cozy, and easy to serve.
Customizable – Use any inexpensive red wine and adjust sweetness to taste.
Crowd-pleasing – Even people who “don’t love wine” enjoy this version.
Heart-healthier choice – Red wine + warming spices = Mediterranean-friendly indulgence.

And perhaps best of all: once the pot is simmering, you’re free to enjoy your guests instead of standing at the bar all night making cocktails.

Tips for Perfect Glühwein

A few small details make a big difference:

✔ Use inexpensive red wine

Save the fancy bottles for sipping. Any dry red works—avoid overly sweet varieties.

✔ Don’t let it boil

Boiling evaporates alcohol and ruins the flavor. Keep it warm and steamy, not bubbling.

✔ Add honey to taste

If the wine is very cheap or very dry, you may need a little extra honey.

✔ Let the spices infuse

The longer it stays on low heat, the stronger and more fragrant the flavors.

✔ Use whole spices, not ground

Ground spices make the wine gritty; whole spices infuse cleanly.

✔ Make it festive

Serve in mugs for maximum coziness.

Hot Spiced Red Wine (Glühwein) Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle red wine (anything inexpensive is perfect)

  • 1 cup orange juice (fresh-squeezed or 100% OJ)

  • 2 cinnamon sticks

  • 12 whole cloves

  • 2 Tbsp honey (or more to taste)

  • ½ cup water

  • Optional: 1 whole orange or tangerine

Directions

  1. Pour the red wine, orange juice, and cinnamon sticks into a pot and set it over medium heat.

  2. If using the whole orange or tangerine, poke the cloves directly into the peel. This prevents them from floating freely and saves you from straining later. If not using an orange, add the cloves directly to the pot—just remember to strain before serving.

  3. Heat the ½ cup water and dissolve the honey into it, stirring until incorporated. Add the honey mixture to the pot.

  4. Warm the wine gently, stirring occasionally, but do not let it boil.

  5. Once hot, turn the heat to low and allow the wine to infuse for at least 20 minutes. The longer it sits, the richer the spices become.

  6. Taste the wine before serving and adjust with additional honey or orange juice as needed.

  7. Serve hot in mugs and enjoy!

Perfect for Entertaining

Holiday gathering? Family get-together? Festive night in?

This hot spiced wine is like a grown-up version of punch—easy to make in a big batch, extremely sippable, and guaranteed to get people talking. The spices make it wonderfully warming, while the citrus keeps it bright and flavorful.

  5. The spice flavors get stronger as they meld together. If you have time, allow the pot to sit over very low heat for 20 minutes or more. Stir occasionally.
  6. Taste the wine before serving. As each bottle is different, you will want to adjust the amounts of orange juice and honey.
