Why This Slow Cooker Oatmeal Is So Amazing

There’s something magical about waking up to a meal that’s already done. While you sleep, simple ingredients—steel-cut oats, chopped apples, cinnamon, and almond milk—transform into a creamy, comforting breakfast that smells like homemade apple pie.

This recipe is:
✔ Naturally dairy-free
✔ High in fiber (great for gut health!)
✔ Perfect for batch cooking
✔ Budget friendly
✔ Family-approved

It’s wonderful for hectic weekday mornings but special enough for slow, cozy weekends or when you’re hosting overnight guests.

The Perfect Breakfast for Busy Days

Imagine waking up to a warm bowl of cinnamon-scented oatmeal before you’ve even had your first sip of coffee. No rushing. No cereal boxes. No last-minute “what’s for breakfast?” panic.

Just scoop, top, and enjoy.

To make mornings even more fun, we often create a toppings bar:

Favorite Topping Ideas

  • Crushed pecans or walnuts

  • Honey or pure maple syrup

  • Greek yogurt for extra creaminess

  • Raisins or dried cranberries

  • Pumpkin seeds or chia seeds

  • A dash of cinnamon or nutmeg

Kids especially love getting to choose their own toppings—breakfast suddenly becomes exciting.

My Love Letter to the Slow Cooker

My Crockpot is one of my most-used kitchen tools, especially as a mom. There’s nothing more satisfying than coming home—or waking up—to a hot meal ready and waiting. It’s like having a tiny kitchen assistant who never complains.

If your slow cooker has been collecting dust, this recipe is your sign to bring it out again. You can also find plenty of other delicious slow-cooker meals on our site.

Tips for Perfect Crockpot Oatmeal

✔ Use steel-cut oats only

Rolled or quick oats turn mushy in the slow cooker.

✔ Peel your apples if you like (I usually don’t)

They soften beautifully either way.

✔ Adjust sweetness at the end

If you’re cooking for guests, leave the honey out during cooking and let everyone sweeten their own bowl.

✔ Know your slow cooker

Some run hotter than others. The first time you make this, check around the 6–7 hour mark.

✔ Make extra—it reheats well

Just add a splash of almond milk when reheating to get that creamy texture back.

Apple Pie Crockpot Oatmeal

Fresh chopped apples and steel-cut oats are cooked together with spicy cinnamon and creamy almond milk. The oatmeal comes out creamy and delicious with a touch of honey or some crushed nuts on top. You will wake to the heavenly smell of apple pie in your house, only it’s better because you did practically no work (and it’s healthier)! This is the perfect recipe for busy weekday breakfasts or for impressing weekend guests (when you want to sleep in too! I can't be the only one, right?) On weekends, for guests, or when we want something a little extra special, we use the oatmeal as a base and set up a toppings bar. Crushed nuts, honey, cinnamon, yogurt, and raisins are all delicious on top of this oatmeal, and people love scooping them in! My kids in particular love being able to scoop on their own toppings.
